UOSSM INTERNATIONAL IS RESPONDING TO THE UNPRECEDENTED EARTHQUAKE IN NORTHWEST SYRIA
Our team of over 1800 humanitarian workers, has responded immediately to the needs on the ground to support the affected population in northwest Syria. The situation is changing rapidly. Nine hours after the early morning 7.8 magnitude earthquake on 6th February 2023, another 7.7 magnitude aftershock hit the region. UOSSM’s humanitarian responders have been working non-stop to keep our 34 medical facilities open to provide life-saving emergency medical and relief services.
The region in Syria most affected by the earthquake is northwest Syria where a population of more than 4.5 million live; more than 60% are internally displaced and the majority of these people are women and children. More than 1 million still live in tented settlements. They have faced military attacks, destruction of hospitals and homes, making this, even before the earthquake, the worse humanitarian disaster since WWII.
The death and injury toll continue to rise with thousands expected to be trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings. The number of deaths (in Syria) has exceeded 4000 and the number of injuries is likely to reach more than 100,000. Our colleagues are themselves among the victims. One of our doctors, and his family, were confirmed dead under the rubble today and dozens of others have serious injuries, have lost loved ones, or their homes.
The situation on the ground needs an immediate, urgent response given how restricted aid from the international community to this area has been. UOSSM International pleas with its friends, supporters, and partners to contribute to our appeal so that we can continue our life and limb saving efforts. All donations will be used for northwest Syria given the high needs.
